Applying for a Marshall Scholarship

The applications for the 2024 Marshall Scholarship are now open!

The information below outlines the process and key points to consider when thinking about applying for a Marshall Scholarship.

Who is a Marshall Scholar

Marshall Scholars contribute to the long-lasting partnership between the British and American peoples, their governments, and their institutions by developing future leaders with a deep understanding of British society. Marshall Scholars are gifted, independent, and diverse individuals who grow both intellectually and personally during their time as Scholars. Their close ties to Britain through its top academic programs help them succeed personally in the end.

Before you Apply

  • Read the Rules for Candidates carefully. Consider the objectives of the Marshall Scholarship Programme (see the opening paragraph of the Rules for Candidates)

The Process

To apply for a Marshall Scholarship, candidates must fill out the application and submit it electronically to their undergraduate institution. The institution will verify its accuracy and decide whether to endorse it. If the application is endorsed, a letter of support will be attached and sent to the appropriate regional committee through the system. It is recommended that candidates contact their university as soon as possible if they are considering applying for a Marshall Scholarship.

The deadlines for the 2024 Marshall Competition are 26 September 2023 for applicants and recommenders at 5:00 pm in your university’s time zone. 28 September 2023 for endorsement and submission by US Institution at 5:00 pm in your university’s time zone.

Your Completed Application

Candidates may apply in one region only – either that in which they have their permanent home address or ordinary place of residence/employment, or that in which they are studying. Any candidate applying in more than one region will automatically be disqualified.

Candidates may apply for either the one-year or two-year Scholarship, not both. Any candidate found applying for both will automatically be disqualified.

Candidates must submit their application on the online form provided. Applications must be endorsed by the President, Provost, or Academic Dean of the applicant’s US educational undergraduate institution. The online application must be submitted and authorized by a designated member of staff at the applicant’s educational institution. Please note permission must be sought to be endorsed by your graduate institution.

No endorsing institution may submit more than 24 applications overall. There is no cap on the number of applications that can be sent to an individual Region.

NB Your institution may have earlier deadlines for submission of your application. Please ask your institutional advisor for guidance on internal deadlines.

All applicants must complete and submit their applications, including letters of recommendation, no later than 5:00 pm in the time zone where your endorsing institution is located on 26 September 2023. The application will then be processed by your endorsing institution for submission. No changes will be able to be made to the application after this date.

Final submission of the application including the three letters of recommendation and letter of endorsement must be submitted online by the endorsing institution and received at the regional centre no later than 5:00pm in the time zone where your endorsing institution is located on 28 September 2023.

You will be able to track and monitor your application’s progress online.

What Happens Next

The United States will receive and review applications at eight regional centers. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview in November. You can find the dates and guidance for the interviews here. The final selection will be announced shortly after the interview. Successful applicants will be offered a writing scholarship and will be asked to accept or decline the offer in writing within 10-12 days of receiving it. (Please note that this timeframe may be shorter if the interviews occur late in the interview week). Like other UK government-funded programs, the Marshall Commission requires scholars to provide a definitive and final response in this manner so that the Commission can arrange the best and most appropriate graduate program and living accommodation for each scholar’s needs as soon as possible.
