How to request an admissions deferral

Achieving admission to a prestigious institution abroad is a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the hard work and merit of the applicant. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances can sometimes prevent a student from beginning their studies as planned. In such cases, it may be possible to take advantage of a deferred admissions option offered by the institution.

What does deferring admission mean?

Postponing enrollment at a university for a semester or year due to unforeseen circumstances is known as deferring admission. By deferring admission, you are pushing back your start date and joining the institution during a later admission cycle. There may be several reasons why you might consider deferring admission, including personal or health-related factors, or unexpected situations like the COVID-19 pandemic, which are beyond your control.

All students (coursework and non-coursework)

You can defer the commencement of your course for a maximum of two semesters, or one year.

If you have accepted your offer and your student visa has been approved, deferring your course may affect your visa. When you submit your deferral request, you must provide evidence of compassionate or compelling circumstances preventing you from enrolling in your course on time.

If your application for deferral is approved, you’ll be issued a new deferred offer and a confirmation of enrollment.

note: If you’re a Higher Degree by Research (graduate research) student, a deferral may affect the availability of academic supervision and any scholarships awarded. Your deferral may need to be approved by the Board of Graduate Research.

Eligible circumstances for deferral

Acceptable circumstances for deferral may include:

  • serious illness or injury (medical certificate required)
  • bereavement of close family members (documentation required)
  • major political upheaval or natural disaster in your home country requiring emergency travel (evidence this has impacted your studies required)
  • a traumatic experience, including involvement in or witnessing a serious accident (police or psychologist’s report required) or witnessing or being the victim of a serious crime that has impacted you (police or psychologist’s report required)
  • The University was unable to offer a prerequisite subject
  • failure to meet one or more of the conditions on your Letter of Offer
  • There is a delay in the grant of your student visa (dated documentation is required).

Please note: The Department of Home Affairs will assess your request, and if it’s not approved, you’ll be required to inform the university you applied to.

How to request a deferred admission?

  • Before deferring your admission, ensure you communicate with the university admissions team to confirm the required documents for your deferred admission application.
  • In most cases, institutions or departments require a letter explaining why you need to defer.
  • Make sure your application is complete and delivered on time. Your letter should demonstrate your intent to enroll on a specific date.

Deferred admissions for international students are subject to stricter rules in the United States, with only a limited number of institutions offering this option. In contrast, the process is simpler and more streamlined in countries such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Students can easily secure deferred admission by providing a valid reason.

Benefits of deferring your admission

If your request is approved, you will have enough time to deal with whatever the reason for deferral was.

With the available time, you can think about what you would like to explore. You can build your soft skills or participate in humanitarian activities during that period.

Refusing deferral request

Your deferral requests may not be accepted for courses like medicine. Also, institutions can refuse your request if you are late to submit it.
