The Dell Scholarship Program

This article will enlighten you on the steps to applying for the Dell Scholarship Program

The Dell Scholars program was created to act as a safety net for many students’ difficulties while obtaining a degree. However, we know that many students and their families may have difficulty affording college. Each year, 500 Dell Scholars are chosen nationally and awarded a scholarship as well as several non-financial benefits.

On their way to earning a college degree, students are nurtured and given the tools they need through this scholarship and college completion program. The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has funded 5,000 scholars since the program’s inception in 2004, including more than 2,000 college graduates.

  • Participate in a program-approved college readiness program in grades 11 and 12

  • Be on track to graduate from an accredited high school in the current academic year
  • Demonstrate a need for financial assistance
  • Be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant in the first year of college
  • Plan to enroll full-time at an accredited higher education institution in the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in the fall directly following high school graduation
  • Earn a minimum of a 2.4 GPA

Although we have a 2.4 GPA requirement, the Dell Scholars program specifically targets low-income, highly driven individuals who are better than their grades suggest and show the determination to succeed despite personal challenges. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a unique “GPA” of grit, potential, and ambition in their quest for a college education:

-by taking action to address or overcome personal challenges in their lives related to their families, schools, or communities.

-by participating in college readiness programs and seeking out academic rigor.

-by preparing themselves and planning for their dream of graduating with a college degree.

How do I apply?

The first step in applying for a scholarship through the Dell Scholars program is filling out the online application. Key application dates are listed here. All submissions will be evaluated after submission, and a set of semifinalists will be chosen. A recent copy of their high school transcript, a full Student Aid Report (SAR) from their FAFSA, and an online recommendation are required of semifinalists. An impartial selection committee reviews all information following the submission of the semifinalist information. View a sample application  here.

How can scholarship funds be used?

Our scholarship is designed to be flexible so that scholars can use award money for the many costs that arise during their college career. In addition to funding tuition, fees, and full cost of attendance for undergraduate study, scholarship awards may be used towards graduate school, loan repayment, study abroad, and internship stipends.

Which students at UT Austin will become Dell Scholars?

Through our partnership with The University of Texas at Austin, qualifying first-year students will become Dell Scholars. Dell Scholars at UT Austin will be notified of their award with their initial financial aid package in March. There is no separate application. To maintain eligibility, students must maintain full-time enrollment, remain in good standing, and complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. Eligibility will be determined at the point of entry in their freshman year. Once a student is included in the program, as long as they meet the continuing student criteria to remain in good standing, they will continue to receive program benefits.
