The Victoria University International Scholarship

This article will enlighten you on the process concerning the application for the Victoria University International Scholarship.

Victoria University (VU) is pleased to assist hundreds of sponsors and recipients of overseas scholarships. To assist students, we offer a variety of externally financed and university-funded scholarships. We provide undergraduate, graduate, and higher degrees by research in addition to vocational education and training (VET) programs for overseas students.

The VU overseas Scholarship assists new overseas students who intend to begin their undergraduate, postgraduate (coursework), or higher education diploma studies in 2023.

If you already hold a scholarship, or if you are sponsored, remember to note it when you submit your international online application.

All scholarship applicants must meet VU’s academic entry requirements and any eligibility requirements for their scholarship.

Eligibility Requirement (2023 commencement):

The program is open to new students starting an undergraduate, postgraduate (coursework), or higher education diploma program at VU Melbourne. This scholarship is not available for courses in English, Foundation Studies, VET, or research. Your academic record or financial position might be taken into account, depending on the scholarship you’re applying for. Only full-time students are often eligible for scholarships.

There are limited circumstances in which a scholarship may be granted to a part-time student, such as illness or other exceptional circumstances.

You will need to submit a statement with supporting documentation demonstrating exceptional circumstances to be considered for a scholarship.

If you are enrolled part-time and registered with Accessibility Services you are eligible for scholarships.

Once you have been awarded a scholarship, your eligibility will be checked before each payment. See payments and ongoing eligibility for more information.

Applications vary depending on the scholarship. Please see the individual scholarship pages for more information on how to apply:

You can submit more than one scholarship application and might be qualified for more than one award. However, you will only be given one scholarship. The scholarship that is most likely to help you is typically this one.

assuming you are already receiving a scholarship and applying for one with a greater value or longer duration, you will be required to forfeit the scholarship with the lower value (assuming your application is accepted).

If VU grants you an equity scholarship, you might also be eligible for an outside scholarship based on academic achievement. However, if the external scholarship materially affects your financial situation, you might be required to disclose all of your income, including the amount of the external scholarship.

If you apply for an equity scholarship, please notify us of any other scholarships you receive because these may impact your eligibility. Please also tell us if you are receiving an equity scholarship and are then granted another scholarship.

You are not eligible for a VU Access scholarship if you:

  • already have a Commonwealth scholarship or
  • are receiving a Start-up Loan from Centrelink.

At Victoria University, we offer both equity and merit-based scholarships.

Merit scholarships are awarded based on academic performance. The criteria vary for each scholarship and you should check individual scholarship pages for details.

Equity scholarships are offered to applicants who demonstrate the most severe disadvantage or greatest need. They are awarded and scored on a range of factors such as:

  • low income or financial disadvantage
  • educational disadvantage
  • caring for others
  • disability
  • language background
  • indigenous background and
  • any other demonstrated hardship.

Your school, TAFE, or university grades are not taken into account during the evaluation process for equity scholarships.

These hardship characteristics will be used to rank applications if more applicants than equity scholarships are available. The candidates who scored the highest on these criteria will be given a scholarship. To raise your chances of being ranked correctly, make sure you:

  • include all the relevant information about your circumstances in your application
  • provide all required supporting documentation.

How to apply:

Students will be assessed automatically after submitting their application for an eligible course.

Value (2023 commencement):

Scholarship applications are open during specific times throughout the year.

Most VU scholarships (TAFEundergraduate and graduate research) are open for applications between August and October for study in the following year. Sometimes there may also be a mid-year application round in June and July.

Externally-funded scholarships are offered throughout the year.

Please see individual scholarship pages for more information on when applications open.

There are many reasons why your scholarship application may have been unsuccessful. You may have been ineligible at the time of application, or we received a large number of applications in comparison to the number of scholarships we had available.

We encourage you to apply again for the next available round of scholarships.

Successful TAFE (certificate and diploma) and undergraduate (degree-level) scholarship offers are sent in late January and February. Recipients will receive a scholarship offer pack in the mail.

If you are successful you must return the acceptance documents by the required date or your scholarship will be allocated to someone else.

After accepting a scholarship you must maintain satisfactory academic progress to continue receiving the scholarship.

Scholarships are paid several months after scholarship assessments.

Payments for successful scholarship applications will usually be made by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to your nominated bank account in late April (and/or September if applicable). This is after we checked your enrolment status at Census.
